1864 – General Phil Sheridan is assigned command of the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac and after a series of battles in the Shenandoah Valley, including the Battles of Winchester and Cedar Creek, begins a scorched earth policy to deprive the Confederate of supplies from the Shenandoah Valley
