June 3, 1863 – Mosby’s Rangers or Raiders (43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry) was organized by Col. John S. Mosby, also known as the “Grey Ghost”, at Rector’s Crossroads in Loudoun County, Virginia as a partisan force to harass and disrupt the Union Army in Northern Virginia. Several days later on June 9th, 1863, the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War occurs at Brandy Station near Culpeper, Virginia
